About Me

Vision

My personal vision in life is to grow in emotional congruence, relational connectedness and vocational fruitfulness. In the same vein, the vision for my work is to facilitate emotional, relational and vocational wellness and growth through counselling, clinical supervision and strengths coaching.

Experience

My vocational journey began more than 20 years ago when I graduated from National University of Singapore majoring in Social Work and Psychology. Since then, I have practised social work and counselling in a medical setting and various Family Service Centres. I have also practised as a therapist and clinical supervisor in a counselling centre. I have extensive experience facilitating sessions for individuals, couples and families.

My experience and interest in supervision developed progressively and deepened over the past 20 years. In addition to having individual supervisees, I have conducted group supervision in family service centres where I worked with, and as part of a post-graduate diploma course in counselling practice for both social workers and counsellors. Clinical supervision is an avenue where I am able to mentor and empower counsellors and social workers in the field.

Each of the above experiences has shaped me and moulded me – in skills, knowledge and self as a therapist and clinical supervisor.

These are some of the presenting issues and needs (non-exhaustive) of clients whom I have helped and supported:

  • Emotional issues such as depressive moods, anxiety symptoms, anger management, insomnia or nightmares, difficulty in focusing, grief and loss, self-worth and self-confidence, fears and traumatic experience, addictions, experience of isolation, discrimination, loneliness, helplessness, etc;

  • Relational issues such as interpersonal conflict and communication issues, marital issues, parenting issues, family and workplace abuse;

  • Vocational issues such as job fit, role or job transition, work challenges or stress, decision-making in vocational crossroads.

Approach

Therapy / Counselling

Therapy or Counselling is a process by which a therapist and you (as a client) work towards your emotional and relational wellness and growth. This may include outcomes such as problem resolution, enhanced coping, restoration, healing and growth. The counselling conversation facilitated by your therapist, seeks to create a safe, empathetic and reflective space for change and growth to occur.

Therapeutic Conversation

I believe in the power of therapeutic conversation. These are what I would like you to experience during our conversations:

  • Feeling safe to share your story, to feel and not be judged

  • Being understood and empathised

  • Gain greater awareness and making sense of yourself and the situation you are in

  • Greater clarity and confidence to make choices

  • Growth in self-compassion and appreciation

Therapeutic Relationship

I value and seek to build a safe, trusting and connecting professional relationship with you. In addition to my training and experience, I bring my genuine, warm, empathetic, congruent self as well as my relationship building strengths into our sessions, seeking to connect with you and facilitate a safe conversation. At the same time, I recognize the importance of being mindful and self-reflexive about our therapeutic relationship. I also welcome feedback from you as it is a two-way process in establishing a trusting therapist-client relationship.

Integrative Approach

I take a strengths-oriented and non-pathological approach in my work with you. The “problem” we experience are not meant to be a pathological label. The “problem” we experience is merely an outward presentation of untold and untellable stories. I am a professional guide helping you to be in touch, to make sense and to give words to the struggles and challenges of your stories, and through the process, to access your inner strengths for wellness and growth. While I prioritise facilitating change through conversations and drawing from your inner resources, I would also offer my expertise, suggestions and ideas as ways to help you cope better, heal and grow.

In my counselling practice, I am influenced by a few key trainings and theories which shaped my lens and skills. Hence, I see myself using an integrative approach in my counselling work. Primarily, my work is guided by the Family and Systemic Psychotherapy approach. Other approaches which I actively integrate into my practice include the Satir Therapy as well as the Internal Family Systems model.

Therapeutic Lens

The following approaches and models have influenced the therapeutic lens in my counselling practice. They would guide my conversation with you to explore, assess and collaborate with you in taking steps towards your therapy goals.

My training in Satir teaches me to look deeper beyond what is visible - we are beings with inner layers such as emotions, perceptions, expectations, yearnings and self. And often what we experience as the problem is merely the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, “the problem is not the problem, the coping is”.

The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model highlights the complexity and simplicity of our internal emotional and psychological system. Through the IFS lens, I have deepened my appreciation of the different parts in us and how one experiences stress and distress. IFS helps me appreciate that some parts of our coping stem from a protective and good intention. It seeks to protect us from the most vulnerable parts of us that we find it hard to face and to attend to.

My systemic training in family and systemic psychotherapy empowers me to see the connectedness, the themes and patterns both within the intrapersonal self and the interpersonal realm. The systemic lens plays a key role in guiding the way I navigate the therapeutic conversations with clients by using circular and reflexive questions with exploratory and influencing intent to enhance understanding and bring about changes.
